Read this preface from Living Life As You Choose"I hate it here. I want to come home." Until last month, John Burns, ninety-three, was a healthy, active man who did all the shopping, errands, and cooking for himself and his wife, Emma. Then he broke his leg. "John, I can’t take care of you at home. You know that. I’m not strong enough to do it myself. Where would we get the money to hire help for you?" The reality of the situation hits John like a ton of bricks. Emma is right — she can’t care for him at home. But two weeks in the rehabilitation ward of the nursing home have made him desperate. "I feel like I’m in jail! I need to come home!" Emma visits daily, bringing food, books, and other tastes of home. She watches his feelings of desperation give way to helplessness, and then hopelessness. His vitality, and finally his life, ebb away. Deeply depressed, Emma dies three months after John’s passing. ~ The strategic thinking in this book will offer you ways to live as you choose, no
matter what health problems may arise. You, your spouse, and your children will
be free of the overwhelming burden of caregiving, you can stay home, and your
assets will be protected. Peace of mind is within reach. KAREN SHOFF To order this book, click here. ~
Karens initial experience working in nursing homes as a social worker was in the 1970s in the state of Connecticut. Following this experience, she vowed that she would never put a family member in a nursing home and that the rest of her career would be devoted to helping other people remain at home. She held positions as a social worker at the Jewish Family Service of Santa Monica, as the gerontology specialist at The Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center and as the Director of Project Caring which sends volunteers into nursing homes. Karen was in private practice as one of the first geriatric care managers in Los Angeles, and taught counseling the elderly at UCLA Extension. She gave the first "You and Your Aging Parent" seminars in Los Angeles in the late 70s. Karen currently delivers seminars and speeches on the four steps to take in our middle years to preserve our long term dignity at home. You have written a clear, convincing, heartfelt, brilliantly (since simply) organized treatise on how to responsibly age! I am now looking at how the word gets out to those my age and younger, who need to know the information your book provides so they, themselves, can determine their destiny. There is much work to do and you have started it. You have exposed a scandal and provided the means with which to redress it. You book is of immense importance! Lenore Broughton |
